Admiralty (short for Board of Admiralty), a British government department which, between its inception in the early 18th century and its amalgamation into the Ministry of Defence in 1964, was responsible for the conduct of naval affairs. In all matters concerning colonial defence, including the defence of Canada, the Admiralty was a necessary participant because of its role in transporting supplies and ensuring maritime security.
