Baroque Trio of Montreal/Trio baroque de Montréal

Baroque Trio of Montreal/Trio baroque de Montréal. Formed in 1955 by Melvin Berman (oboe), Mario Duschenes (flute and recorder), and Kelsey Jones (harpsichord and organ) to perform works chiefly of the baroque period. The group also, however, played 20th-century pieces suitable for its combination of instruments. Its first concert took place in 1955 at the Ermitage in Montreal. It subsequently performed on CBC radio, at McGill University's Redpath Hall, and in 1957 at the Montreal Festivals. It toured Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Maritimes and performed at Expo 67. Among numerous musicians who appeared as guests with the trio were Walter Joachim, the Masella brothers, Mildred Goodman, Kenneth Gilbert, and Jean-Pierre Rampal. It commissioned and premiered several works by Canadians, including Jones' Sonata da Camera (1957), Jacques Hétu'sTrio (1961), Pentland'sCanzona (1962), and Schafer'sTrio (1964). In 1973, following a concert at the Eaton Auditorium in Toronto and a CBC broadcast, the trio ceased its activities after having given close to 1000 concerts and radio broadcasts.
