Charles George Horetzky, photographer, explorer, civil servant (b at Edinburgh, Scot 20 June 1838; d at Toronto 30 Apr 1900). An employee of the Hudson's Bay Co, he was at Fort Garry in 1869 during the RED RIVER REBELLION. In 1871 he was hired by the CPR survey primarily for his abilities as an amateur photographer. He is best known for his 1871-79 survey photographs of northern BC and northern Ontario. Though intelligent, fearless and innovative, he was impatient and quick to take offence, traits that cost him his job in 1880. He worked for the Ontario government supervising public works 1883-1900 and wrote Canada on the Pacific (1874) and 2 other pamphlets.
