David Wren. Guitar builder, b Toronto 9 Jul 1952. After apprenticing 1973-7 with Jean Larrivée, he opened his own shop in Toronto. Wren has specialized in steel-string, flat-top guitars, but has also made arch-top, semi-acoustic, and solid-body electric instruments, producing a maximum of some 30 annually. Among musicians to own Wren guitars are the Canadians Gary Benson, John Allan Cameron, Bruce Cockburn, the Good Brothers, and Rob Piltch, the US singers Joan Baez and Jackson Browne, and the Australian singer Roger Whittaker. In 1988 Wren also began to restore instruments in association with a Toronto music retailer, the Twelfth Fret.
