James Endicott

James Endicott, missionary, clergyman (b in Devonshire, Eng 8 May 1865; d at Toronto 9 Mar 1954). Coming to Canada at age 17, he served Methodist home missions until he returned to school at Wesley College, Winnipeg, and was ordained in 1893.

James Endicott, missionary, clergyman (b in Devonshire, Eng 8 May 1865; d at Toronto 9 Mar 1954). Coming to Canada at age 17, he served Methodist home missions until he returned to school at Wesley College, Winnipeg, and was ordained in 1893. That same year, he went to Sichuan, China, and was active in church publishing and education at Chengdu. He returned to Canada in 1910 and from 1913 to 1937 headed the Foreign Missions Board of the Methodist Church and, after 1925, of The United Church of Canada. He was the second Moderator of the UNITED CHURCH 1926-28 and explained the new church to missionaries in the field. A respected preacher and pamphleteer, Endicott worked hard for world peace and especially for aid to the developing nations. He led the way in explaining the needs of the Orient to Canadians.
