The first Orders of Prince Edward Island were awarded in 1996. The award gives public recognition to "individual Islanders whose efforts and accomplishments truly have been exemplary."

Individuals presently living in Prince Edward Island, or former long-term residents of the province, are eligible to be considered for investiture in the order. Elected federal, provincial or municipal representatives and members of the judiciary are not eligible for nomination while still holding office. Posthumous nominations are not accepted.

Any individual or organization can submit nominations for the Order of Prince Edward Island. The Insignia of the Order of Prince Edward Island includes an enamelled medallion (Medal of Merit), which incorporates the provincial emblem against a background of gold and blue, a stylized lapel pin and a miniature medal for less formal occasions. The Medal of Merit is worn with a ribbon of rust, green and white. Recipients of the order also receive an official certificate and are entitled to use the letters OPEI after their names.
