Yvon Barette. Pianist, b Hull, Que, 1 Aug 1910. After taking private lessons 1917-20 he studied 1928-38 with Harry Puddicombe at the Canadian Conservatory of Music (Ottawa). Though he made his living as an accountant with the Hull School Board, he gave several recitals in Ottawa 1929-35, in particular for the Morning Music Club. He also gave many private recitals 1931-5 at the residence of the governor-general, Lord Bessborough, and at various embassies. He also played, among other works, Grieg's Piano Concerto in 1935 with the La Salle Symphonic Ensemble of Ottawa, Dohnányi's Variations on a Nursery Song in 1939 with the Cercle philharmonique de Québec, and Liszt's Concerto No. 1 in 1940 with the La Salle ensemble and in 1941 (its orchestral premiere in Quebec City) with the Cercle philharmonique. With a CBC Montreal orchestra under Jean-Marie Beaudet he premiered and on 13 Feb 1949 recorded (RCI 2) Maurice Blackburn'sConcertino for piano and wind instruments. Barette has begun to deposit his personal papers at the ANQ in Hull.
