Georges Erasmus, politician (born at Fort Rae, NWT 8 Aug 1948). Erasmus has been a central figure in NWT territorial politics of the 1970s and 1980s (see Indigenous Peoples: Land Claims). After a period with the Company of Young Canadians, he moved into Indigenous politics, becoming president of the Dene Nation (1976-83) and continuing thereafter as an active member of NWT and national Aborigjnal organizations such as the Assembly of First Nations. He became national chief of AFN in 1985 and was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1987. In 1991 he was named by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to head, with René Dussault of the Quebec Court of Appeal, the royal commission to examine all aspects of Aboriginal affairs in Canada.
