Jones Case

In Jones v A.G. of Canada and NB (1975) the Supreme Court had to judge, among other things, the validity of the federal OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ACT (challenged by Mayor Leonard Jones of Moncton), which makes English and French the official languages for everything that derives from the Parliament and the Government of Canada, by granting their use equal status, rights and privileges in all institutions of Parliament and of the government in Canada. The judges unanimously found that by virtue of its residual power Parliament could enact such a measure.
