    Arthur "Art" Frederick Brown (Primary Source)

     In 2009, The Memory Project interviewed Arthur Brown, a veteran of the Second World War. The following recording (and transcript) is an excerpt from this interview. In 1942, Brown enlisted as an artilleryman in the Canadian Army in Hamilton, Ontario, and completed his training in Orillia, Ontario. He served in Italy, Sicily, and the Netherlands with the 11th Army Field Regiment. In this testimony, Brown discusses various experiences in Europe, including getting hit with shrapnel when a gun he was loading fired prematurely. Brown served in the Canadian military for 32 years and was named to the Order of Military Merit in 1974. He died on 5 February 2010 in Kelowna, British Columbia, at the age of 87.     Arthur Powell (Primary Source)

    Arthur Powell served as an officer with the Royal Artillery in the 37th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. He was sent to North Africa in November 1940 and commanded two anti-aircraft guns. He was captured in April 1941 and sent to Italy as a prisoner of war. He was interned at two camps in Italy, and following the invasion of the peninsula, he was moved up to Germany. While in the camps, he created three camp magazines, the “Rezzanello Review,” the “Padula Parade,” and “Inside Out,” all of which were circulated among the prisoners. In addition to the magazines, he created a board game, and participated in plays and reviews, all within the confines of the prison camps.Please be advised that Memory Project primary sources may deal with personal testimony that reflect the speaker’s recollections and interpretations of events.
