Mount Allison Ladies' College instituted a music program at its inception. In 1874 its first certificates in music, both in piano, were awarded to Ravinia Stewart and Alma Hickman.

Mount Saint Vincent University, Rockingham (Halifax) NS. Non-denominational (formerly Roman Catholic) institution, known familiarly as 'The Mount,' founded by the Sisters of Charity but in 1990 owned and operated by a lay board of governors.

Place des Arts (PDA). Montreal performing arts complex. One of Canada's largest multidisciplinary arts complexes, it grew from three halls in the 1960s, to four in the 1970s, and five in the 1990s.

Queen's University. Founded in Kingston, Ont, by the Presbyterian Church in 1841; it was a non-denominational university after 1912.

Music at Sharon. Annual summer concert series at the Temple of the Children of Peace at Sharon, near Newmarket, Ontario, presented 1981-90 under the auspices of the York Pioneer and Historical Society.

Simon Fraser University. Non-denominational university founded in Burnaby, BC, in 1963, with undergraduate and graduate programs operating on a year-round tri-semester schedule. It was named after Simon Fraser (explorer, fur trader, 1776-1862), who gave his name to the Fraser River.

St Francis Xavier University. Roman Catholic institution founded at Arichat, NS, in 1853 as St Francis Xavier College. In 1855 it was moved to Antigonish, NS. It gained university status in 1866 and awarded its first degrees in 1868.

Trent University. Non-denominational, predominantly undergraduate institution in Peterborough, Ont, with some graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels. Trent University was opened officially in 1964 by the governor general, Georges Vanier.

University of British Columbia. Non-denominational undergraduate and graduate teaching and research institution incorporated 1908 in Vancouver, absorbing the McGill-affiliated McGill University College of Vancouver in 1915 and awarding its first degrees in 1916.

University of Calgary. Non-denominational institution founded in 1945 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta and granted autonomy as the University of Calgary in 1966. It has developed a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

University of Guelph. Founded at Guelph, Ont, in 1964 as a non-denominational graduate and undergraduate institution incorporating the Ontario Veterinary College (founded 1862), the Ontario Agricultural College (1874), and the Macdonald Institute (1903).

University of Lethbridge. Non-denominational university established in 1967 at Lethbridge, Alta. It awarded its first undergraduate degrees in the liberal arts in 1968.

University of Manitoba. Non-denominational university founded in Winnipeg in 1877, and granted its first degrees in 1880. Originally located on Broadway, it moved to its Fort Garry site in 1929 but maintained the Broadway facilities for many years.

​Founded in 1968 by Professor Neil J. Michaud, Université de Moncton’s Department of Music continues a prominent musical tradition in Acadia, teaching music exclusively in French.

On an order from Paul-Émile Cardinal Léger the Faculty of Music was founded 18 Oct 1950 during the rectorship of Mgr Olivier Maurault, whose efforts to establish such a faculty dated from 1939 and became linked with those of the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Music in 1947.

University of New Brunswick. Founded in 1785 in Fredericton as the Academy of Arts and Science. It became the College of New Brunswick in 1800 (enrolment restricted to Anglicans) and King's College in 1828, the same year that it granted its first degrees.

1931 - 68A School of Sacred Music was established in 1931 by Father Conrad Latour, founder and first conductor of the university's Schola cantorum, which existed 1934-43.

University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown. Non-denominational university established in 1969 by the amalgamation of Prince of Wales College, founded in 1834, and St Dunstan's U, founded in 1855.

University of Quebec/Université du Québec. Network of higher education and research establishments, created by an act of the Quebec National Assembly 18 Dec 1968. It includes four constituent universities: Montreal, Trois-Rivières (each with a Module de musique), Chicoutimi, and Rimouski.

University of Regina. Non-denominational university growing out of Regina College, which was founded in 1911 along with the Regina Conservatory of Music (later the Conservatory of Music, University of Regina).
