Michel Dessailliant, dit Richeterre, painter (fl 1701-23). A victim of France's mercantile policy, he was not able to settle permanently in New France and practise his art.

John Mockett Cramp, Baptist minister, writer, educator (b at St Peter's, Isle of Thanet, Eng 25 July 1796; d at Wolfville, NS 6 Dec 1881). Although a well-known writer and theologian, Cramp made his important contribution in higher education.

Octave Crémazie, baptized Claude-Joseph-Olivier, poet, bookseller (b at Québec, Lower Canada 16 Apr 1827; d at Le Havre, France 16 Jan 1879).

Lily Dougall, novelist, religious writer (b at Montréal 16 Apr 1858; d at Cumnor, Eng 9 Oct 1923). In 1880 she went to Britain, deciding on permanent residence there in 1900. Her first story was published in 1889.

Her concert career peaked in 1929 with performances in America, where she was championed by Leopold Stokowski.

Michael Cook, playwright (b at London, Eng 14 Feb 1933; d at St John's 2 July 1994). Cook spent 12 years in the British army and earned a teaching degree at Nottingham University before immigrating to Newfoundland in 1966.

Galina Zoë Garnett, actor, singer, songwriter, writer (born 17 July 1949 in Auckland, New Zealand).

Léo-Paul Desrosiers, writer, civil servant (b at Berthier-en-Haut, Qué 11 Apr 1896; d at Montréal 20 Apr 1967). Desrosiers, who lifted the genre of historical novel to a new level, is the least appreciated and most retiring writer of his generation.

Joe David, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) artist (b at Opitsat, BC 1946). A member of the Clayoquot Band, Joe David is a leading figure in modern Northwest Coast Indigenous Art.

Mazo de la Roche, writer (b at Newmarket, Ont 15 Jan 1879; d at Toronto 12 July 1961). Among the most prolific and widely read of Canadian authors, she wrote 23 novels, more than 50 short stories, 13 plays and many other works.

Dora De Pédery-Hunt, sculptor (b at Budapest, Hungary 16 Nov 1913, d at Toronto 29 Sept 2008). Dora de Pédery-Hunt completed her studies in sculpture and design in Budapest in 1943 and immigrated to Canada in 1948.

William Arthur Deacon, literary critic and editor (b at Pembroke, Ont 6 Apr 1890; d at Toronto 5 Aug 1977).

Betty Roodish Goodwin, painter (b at Montréal 19 Mar 1923; died there 1 December 2008). Betty Goodwin began her career as a visual artist in the late 1940s and began to exhibit her work in the early 1960s. Largely self-taught, Goodwin began with drawing, a practice she was comfortable with.

Klein, Lothar. Composer, teacher, b Hanover, Germany, 27 Jan 1932; naturalized Canadian 1985, d Toronto 3 January 2004; BA (Minnesota) 1954, MA (Minnesota) 1956, PH D (Minnesota) 1961.

The one book of poetry published during her lifetime, Old Spookses' Pass, Malcolm's Katie, and other poems (1884), was privately printed and sold few copies, and it was only with J.W.

Frank Radford Crawley, "Budge," film producer (b at Ottawa 14 Nov 1911; d at Toronto 13 May 1987). Through his company Crawley Films, he produced hundreds of films over his 40-year career. His vitality and enthusiasm and his enterprising nature enabled him to turn his filmmaking hobby into a career.

Judith Crawley, "Judy," film producer, director, scriptwriter (b at Ottawa 21 Apr 1914; d there 15 Sept 1986). She was close collaborator and wife of Frank "Budge"CRAWLEY, and her contribution to their company was extensive throughout its history.

George Dunning, animator (b at Toronto 17 Nov 1920; d at London, UK 15 Feb 1979). George Dunning studied at the Ontario Art College and in 1943 went to work for the NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA (NFB). During his short time with the NFB - he left in 1947 - he displayed a strong, individual talent.
