Joseph-Alfred Mousseau, lawyer, journalist, writer, politician, judge, premier of Québec 1882-84 (b at Berthier-en-Haut, LC 18 July 1838; d at Montréal 30 Mar 1886). Mousseau was admitted to the bar in 1860 and practised civil and criminal law for 20 years, becoming QC in 1873.

The Mercey Brothers. One of Canada's most popular country groups, active 1958-89. It comprised three brothers from Hanover, south of Owen Sound, Ont.

Charlotte Mount Brock Schreiber, née Morrell, painter (b at Woodham, Eng 1834; d at Paignton, Eng 1922). Schreiber was the only female charter member of the ROYAL CANADIAN ACADEMY in 1880 and was the only woman elected full academician until 1933.

Martha Ostenso, novelist (b near Bergen, Norway 6 Sept 1900; d at Seattle, Wash 1963). Ostenso's family immigrated to the midwestern US in 1902, then to Brandon, Manitoba, and later to Winnipeg, where Ostenso completed high school.

Paulette Jiles, poet, novelist, playwright, journalist (b at Salem, Mo 1943). A graduate, in Spanish literature, of the University of Illinois, Paulette Jiles came to Canada in 1969.

Barrie Phillip Nichol, "bpNichol," writer, sound poet, editor, teacher (b at Vancouver 30 Sept 1944; d at Toronto 25 Sept 1988). bpNichol's tragic early death in 1988 robbed us of one of Canada's leading experimental writers, and a truly generous individual and imagination.

Henri Bergeron, media personality, author (b at Saint-Lupicien, Man 1925; d Montreal 10 Jul 2000). The son of a French Canadian farmer and railwayman and a pious and devoted woman from Cevennes, he was born in a very small pioneer house, and grew up in a family of 13 children.

Lorne Hyman Greene, OC, actor, radio broadcaster (born 12 February 1915 in Ottawa, ON; died 11 September 1987 in Santa Monica, California).

Eric Nicol, CM, humorist, playwright, journalist (born 28 December 1919 in Kingston, ON; died 2 February 2011 in Vancouver, BC).

John Cullen Nugent, sculptor, educator (b at Montréal 5 Jan 1921). Studies at St John's University (Collegeville, Minn) exposed him to liberal ideals and the postwar Catholic renewal in the arts.

Frederick John Niven, journalist, novelist (b at Valparaiso, Chile 31 Mar 1878; d at Vancouver 30 Jan 1944). Niven is best known for his novels of Scotland and Scots in Canada. Raised and educated in Scotland, Niven wrote about Canada for British papers after an 1899-1900 trip to BC.

William McFarlane Notman, photographer (b at Montréal 1 Nov 1857; d there 1 May 1913). At age 15 he started to work for his father, photographer William NOTMAN, and was made a partner in the business at about age 25. His

Jean-Paul-Armand Mousseau, artist (b at Montréal 1 Jan 1927; d at Montréal 7 Feb 1991). Mousseau studied at the Collège Notre-Dame (1940-45), where he frequented the studio of Frère Jérôme.

Philip Henry Surrey, painter (b at Calgary 8 Oct 1910; d at Montréal 7 May 1990). He studied at the Winnipeg School of Art (1926-27), with Fred VARLEY in Vancouver, and at the Art Students League, New York (1936).
