Hugh John Hood, writer, academic (b at Toronto 30 Apr 1928; d at Montreal 1 Aug 2000). Hood's writings present a view of Canadian experience in this century realistic in detail and emblematic in intent.

Rupert Clendon Lodge, philosopher (b at Manchester, Eng 1886; d at St Petersburg, Fla 1 Mar 1961). He went to the US in 1914, then to the University of Alberta and finally to the University of Manitoba, where he spent most of his career.

Gaston Miron, poet, publisher (born 8 January 1928 at Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, QC; died 14 December 1996 in Montréal, QC). An Officer of the National Order of Québec and a Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France’s highest honours.

Upon graduation he started a commercial art firm that produced pencil portraits, designs for calendars and posters, and several mural commissions including one for the BC government at the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair.

Charles Huot, painter (b at Québec City 1855; d there 28 Jan 1930). The director of the École normale Laval in Québec organized a subscription fund to help him enrol in 1874 at Paris's École des beaux-arts; he spent much time there in the studio of painter Alexander Cabanel and won a silver medal.

Monica Hughes, née Ince, author (b at Liverpool, Eng 3 November 1925, d at Edmonton 7 March 2003). Monica Hughes spent her childhood in Cairo, London, and Edinburgh. Her Math studies at the University of Edinburgh were interrupted by World War II, when she joined the Women's Royal Naval Service.

John Castell Hopkins, journalist, encyclopedist (b at Dyersville, Iowa 1 Apr 1864; d at Toronto 5 Nov 1923). He became assistant editor of the Toronto Mail and Empire in 1890 and wrote a number of pamphlets, biographies and histories, including the deferential Life and Work of the Right Hon.

Leonard Harold Breau, guitarist, singer, composer (born 5 August 1941 in Auburn, ME; died 12 August 1984 in Los Angeles, CA).

She received major awards for The Wind Has Wings: Poems from Canada (1968), The Miraculous Hind: A Hungarian Legend (1973), The Loon's Necklace (1977), an Indian myth and Petrouchka (1980), a retelling of Stravinsky's ballet.

Clark Blaise, novelist, short-story writer (b at Fargo, N Dak 10 Apr 1940). Clark Blaise spent his childhood moving around the United States, where his Canadian parents were living and working.

bill bissett, poet, artist, performer, publisher (b at Halifax, NS 23 Nov 1939). The son of a judge, bill bissett ran away from home several times as a child, once to join a circus, looking to escape conventional middle-class life.

Claude Thomas Bissell, cultural administrator and author (b at Meaford, Ont 10 Feb 1916; d at Toronto 21 June 2000.). He was educated at Toronto public schools, University of Toronto (BA 1936, MA 1937) and Cornell (PhD 1940).

Jóhann Magnús Bjarnason, author, poet, teacher (b at Medalnes, Nordur-Mulasysla, Iceland 24 May 1866; d at Elfros, Sask 8 Sept 1945). The greatest and most prolific of Icelandic Canadian novelists, Bjarnason immigrated to Canada in 1875.

Peter Biyiasas, chess grandmaster (b at Athens, Greece 19 Nov 1950). He moved to Canada as a child, began to play seriously in Vancouver in the late 1960s, and won the British Columbia championship 1968-71.

Johnny Burke, poet, playwright, songwriter (b at St John's 1851; d there Aug 1930). While working at a variety of jobs, Burke moonlighted as a poet, writing hundreds of broadsheet ballads about events in St John's, printing them on his own press and selling them for 2 to 5 cents a copy.

Charles Tory Bruce, poet, novelist (b at Port Shoreham, NS 11 May 1906; d at Toronto 19 Dec 1971). Bruce graduated from Mount Allison University in 1927, worked for 8 months as a reporter for the Halifax Chronicle, and then joined the Canadian Press.
