Helen Martens. Teacher, choir conductor, ethnomusicologist, b Sagradowska, Ukraine, 21 Feb 1928, naturalized Canadian 1935; LRSM 1952, BA (Minnesota) 1954, MA (Minnesota) 1956, PH D (Columbia) 1968. Her family emigrated to Canada in 1930, settling in Sanford, Man.

Jean (John)-Chrysostome Brauneis (b Johann Chrysostomus). Bandmaster, teacher, composer, baptized Herrnsheim, near Worms 29 Mar 1785, d Quebec City 15 Sep 1832. He moved to Quebec City about 1813, as a musician with the 70th Foot Regiment British army band.

Thelma Wilson (b Guttormson). Pianist, teacher, b Winnipeg, of Icelandic parents, 12 Apr 1919; ATCM 1935, LRSM 1935. She studied in Winnipeg with Louise McDowell and Leonard Heaton and developed a busy career as a solo performer, accompanist, and teacher.

(Henriette) Louise Burchell. Organist, teacher, composer, b Sydney, NS, 13 May 1882, d Falmouth, NS, 6 Jan 1962; ARCM, LTCL, B MUS (Oxford) 1908, MA (Radcliffe) 1929. She studied organ, piano, and theory with Peter LeSueur in St John's, Nfld, and then had special coaching in London from C.W.

Henry Prince. Music dealer, bandmaster, composer, b ?, d Montreal 1888? In 1854 he acquired the instrument retailing and sheet music business of Mead, Brother and Co, continuing its operation under his own name. The bulk of his stock was imported from the USA and Europe.

Haralds (Peter Albinus) Berino. Composer, organist, pianist, teacher, b Riga, Latvia, 12 Mar 1906, d Truro, NS, 18 Aug 1982. His training was at the Latvian Cons, where he studied composition with Joseph Wihtol and piano with Gomanes-Dombrovska.

Lorraine Vaillancourt. Pianist, conductor, b Arvida (Jonquière), Que, 23 Sep 1947. Lorraine Vaillancourt studied 1964-8 at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec with Hélène Landry and 1968-70 at the École normale de musique in Paris with Pierre Dervaux (orchestral conducting).

Kenneth (Ira) Bray. Educator, bassoonist, arranger, b Chaffey Township (Muskoka), Ont, 24 Feb 1919, d London, Ont, 25 Jun 1999; B MUS (Toronto) 1949, M MUS (ESM, Rochester) 1957.

(Marie Anne) Germaine Bruyère. Soprano, b Montreal 20 Sep 1905. She studied theory with Champagne, and dramatic art and languages, then voice, with Salvator Issaurel and Rodolphe Plamondon. In New York her teachers were Edgar Schofield, Florence Easton, and Ivan Ivantzoff.

Isabelle (b Boyer de la Giroday) Burnada. Mezzo-soprano, teacher, b Curepipe, Mauritius, 15 Feb 1899, d Vancouver 13 Mar 1972. Her parents emigrated to Canada when she was a child and settled in Mission, BC, in 1909. In 1919 she moved to Vancouver.

Reine Décarie (Sister Jean-d'Alexandrie). Voice teacher, composer, born Montreal 4 Jan 1912, died Longueuil, Que., 21 Sep 2008; B MUS (Montreal) 1941, M MUS (Montreal) 1944, L MUS composition (Montreal) 1948.

(Robert) Victor Brault. Baritone, choir conductor, teacher, b Ste-Martine, near Montreal, 1899, d Montreal 1963. The brother of Cédia Brault, he studied piano in Montreal with Alexis Contant and voice and theory 1919-24 in Paris with A. Landély Hettich and André Gédalge respectively.

Gerhard (Friedrich) Brunzema. Organ manufacturer, b Emden, Germany, 6 Jul 1927, d Fergus, Ont 7 Apr 1992. He grew up in Menden, an industrial community on the Ruhr river, and apprenticed and worked as a journeyman organ builder 1948-52 for Paul Ott in Göttingen.

George Calangis. Conductor, mandolinist, banjoist, b Vancouver 14 Jun 1916, d there 1 Jul 1966. As a boy he performed in vaudeville in an ensemble with his five sisters - Geneva, Angelina, Mary, Helen, and Ethel.

AGLAÉ (b Jocelyne Deslongchamps). Singer, actress, b L'Épiphanie, near Montreal, 13 May 1933, d Montreal 19 Apr 1984. She began her career at 16 in Montreal nightclubs (eg, the Au Faisan doré) under the name Josette France.

Richard (Westall) Cooke. Business executive, volunteer-administrator, choirmaster, b Leeds 28 Apr 1903, d Winnipeg 11 Jul 1982. Brought to Canada at seven, he sang as a child in Manitoba church choirs. Prior to 1964 he served as choirmaster in four Winnipeg Anglican churches successively.
