John Ferguson Godfrey, academic, editor, politician (b at Toronto 19 Dec 1942). A surprising choice to become editor of the Financial Post in 1987, Godfrey was educated at University of Toronto and Oxford, where he studied French history.

Philippe (Georges) Bruneau. Accordionist, composer, b Montreal 22 Sep 1934, d Forcalquier, France 7 Aug 2011. Bruneau's father was an amateur accordionist. Bruneau took up the instrument at 15 and joined a folk music ensemble at the Trinidad Ballroom in Montreal at 19.

Alton Goldbloom, pediatrician, educator, author (b at Montréal 23 Sept 1890; d there 3 Feb 1968). A 1916 McGill medical graduate, Goldbloom pioneered modern pediatrics in Québec and eastern Canada. Following internships, including 2 years in New York, he began to practise in Montréal (1920).

Joshua Jackson, actor (b at Vancouver 11 Jun 1978). Joshua Jackson attended Kitsilano Secondary School in Vancouver and had appeared onscreen as a very young child, deciding at age 11 to make acting his career.

This intense and versatile artist grew up in Edmonton and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from the University of Alberta in 1972. His contributions are intimately attached to the stories of Edmonton's large regional theatre, the CITADEL, and a small company, the Phoenix.

Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, soldier, governor (b at Galt, Ont 20 July 1869; d at Bexhill, Eng 21 Apr 1930). Commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1889, he served first in Singapore, then at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, and as a surveyor in West Africa 1902-14.

Frederick William Beechey, naval officer, artist, explorer (b at London, Eng 17 Feb 1796; d there 29 Nov 1856). Beechey joined the British navy at the age of 10, and saw action at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.

Jean (b Hector) Dansereau. Pianist, teacher, b Verchères, near Montreal, 21 Apr 1891, d Yorktown Heights, NY, 2 Nov 1974; honorary PH D (Montreal) 1940. Born into a family of musicians, he received his first lessons from his mother, a cousin of Calixa Lavallée.

Francesco (Mariano) D'Auria. Conductor, composer, teacher, b Naples 1841, d after 1913. D'Auria was the conductor for the US tour 1881-2 of the soprano Adelina Patti, and worked in New York and Cincinnati before joining the TCM in 1887 as a voice teacher. W.H. Hewlett, Edith Miller, and J.D.A.

Influenced by West-African forms of epic storytelling, Sears developed a signature dramaturgy and performance style that supported and developed its narrative material through choral technique, rhythms, singing and movement. Afrika Solo was premiered in 1987.

Charles écuyer (or Ecuier). Priest, choirmaster, composer, baptized Montreal 20 Nov 1758, d Yamachiche, near Trois-Rivières, Lower Canada (Quebec), 29 May 1820. He was ordained in 1783.

Denis, Jean-François. Composer, b Montreal 24 Feb 1960; BA communications (Concordia) 1982, MFA (Oakland) 1984. Under David Rosenboom, he studied (1982-4) electronic music and recording techniques at Mills College in Oakland, Cal.

James (Vernon) MacDonald. French hornist, b Portage la Prairie, Man, 31 Jan 1945; BA (Queen's) 1969, M MUS (Western) 1972. He learned the french horn in high school in Ottawa, then studied 1960-2 with Leslie Huggett and played in 1961 in the NYO.

Maloney, S. (Stephen) Timothy. Musicologist, clarinetist, administrator, b Toronto 15 Jan 1947; B MUS (Toronto) 1968, Artists Diploma (Toronto) 1969, M MUS (Catholic U) 1970, DMA (Rochester) 1986.

F.M. (Francis Murray) or Ray McLeod. Bandmaster, b Grand Forks, near Nelson, BC, 27 Nov 1918. After training as a trumpeter with 'Tug' Wilson in Vancouver and playing in dance and radio orchestras, he joined the Canadian armed forces in 1941 and became a bandsman.

McTaggart, John. Composer, teacher, organist, conductor, b Liverpool, of Scottish parents, ca 1873, d Selkirk, Man, 15 Jul 1953; ARCM, LRAM, LTCL. His teachers included Sir Charles Stanford (composition) and Alberto Visetti (voice) in London.
