Jacques Genest, physician, medical researcher (b at Montréal 29 May 1919), founder of the Institut de recherches cliniques in Montréal.

There are five veterinary colleges in Canada: the Ontario and Atlantic Veterinary Colleges; the Western College of Veterinary Medicine; and the faculties of veterinary medicine at the Université de Montréal and the University of Calgary.

Robert (Bob) Brent Thirsk, biomedical engineer, astronaut (b at New Westminster, BC 17 Aug 1953). He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Calgary (BSc, 1976) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MSc, 1978), and he received an MD from McGill University in 1982.

Herbert Edward Terrick Haultain, mining engineer, educator (b at Brighton, Eng 9 Aug 1869; d at Toronto 19 Sept 1961). A graduate of U of T who acquired practical mining experience in Europe, he returned to Canada in 1905 as professor of mining and engineering at U of T.

Edward Kielley (or Kielly), surgeon, naval officer (b at St John's c 1790; d there 8 Mar 1855).

John Hamilton Parkin, aeronautical engineer (b at Toronto 27 Sept 1891; d at Ottawa 14 Nov 1981). After graduating in engineering from University of Toronto, Parkin joined the faculty and worked during WWI on explosives production and aviation under T.R. Loudon.

Aser Rothstein, physiologist (born 29 April 1918 in Vancouver, BC; died 4 July 2015 in Guelph, ON). He contributed enormously to the fields of cellular physiology and toxicology.

Robert Methven Petrie, astronomer (b at St Andrews, Scot 15 May 1906; d at Victoria 8 Apr 1966). Brought to Canada by his parents in 1911, Petrie became interested in astronomy at high school and was encouraged by J.S. PLASKETT.

John Gunion Rutherford, veterinarian, administrator (b at Mountain Cross, Scot 25 Dec 1857; d at Ottawa 24 July 1923). A graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College 1879, he practised in Woodstock, Ont, and in the US and Mexico, and settled in Portage la Prairie, Man, 1884.

John Armistead Wilson, civil servant, aviation pioneer (b at Broughty Ferry, Scot 2 Nov 1879; d at Ottawa 10 Oct 1954). Trained as an engineer, he became interested in the potential of aviation while in the Department of Naval Services in WWI.

Robert Hood, arctic explorer, artist (b at Portarlington, Ire 1797; d near Starvation Lk, NWT 20 Oct 1821). Hood joined the Royal Navy at age 14. In 1819 his artistic abilities gained him an appointment with the arctic land

Carlyle Smith Beals, astronomer (b at Canso, NS 29 June 1899; d at Ottawa 2 July 1979). Astronomer and assistant director of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, Victoria, BC, until 1946, Beals was Dominion Astronomer in Ottawa until his retirement in 1964.

John By, lt-col, Royal Engineers (b at Lambeth, Eng and bap 10 Aug 1779; d at Frant, Eng 1 Feb 1836).

John Cabot (a.k.a. Giovanni Caboto), merchant, explorer (born before 1450 in Italy, died at an unknown place and date). In 1496, King Henry VII of England granted Cabot the right to sail in search of a westward trade route to Asia and lands unclaimed by Christian monarchs. Cabot mounted three voyages, the second of which, in 1497, was the most successful. During this journey Cabot coasted the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador, possibly sighted the Beothuk or Innu people of the region, and famously noted that the waters teemed with cod. At the time, the land Cabot saw was thought to be the eastern shore of Asia, the fabled island of Brasil, or the equally fabled Isle of Seven Cities. Cabot and his crew were the second group of Europeans to reach what would become Canada, following Norse explorers around 1000 CE. Despite not yielding the trade route Cabot hoped for, the 1497 voyage provided England with a claim to North America and knowledge of an enormous new fishery.

Dennis Hubert Chitty, zoologist (born 18 September 1912 in Bristol, England; died 3 February 2010 in Vancouver, BC ). Educated at University of Toronto and Oxford, he studied rodent populations as a research officer at the Bureau of Animal Population, Oxford, 1935-61.

Catherine Mary Wisnicki (née Chard), architect (born 19 September 1919 in Winnipeg, MB; died 21 October 2014 in Naramata, BC).
