Percy Algernon Taverner, ornithologist (b at Guelph, Ont 10 June 1875; d at Ottawa 9 May 1947). Taverner first earned a living as an architectural draughtsman while studying birds in his spare time.

Sir James Alexander Grant, physician, politician (b at Inverness, Scot 11 Aug 1831; d at Ottawa 5 Feb 1920). A graduate of Queen's and McGill, he practised medicine for all of his professional life in Ottawa. He was personal physician to the first 8 governors general (1867-1905).

Sir Arthur George Doughty, archivist (b at Maidenhead, Eng 22 March 1860, d at Ottawa 1 Dec 1936). After considering a career in the church, he immigrated to Canada in 1886.

Alice Vibert Douglas, astronomer (b at Montréal 1894; d at Kingston Ont 2 July 1988). Douglas received her doctorate from McGill in 1926. During WWI she was engaged in war work in England and then studied at the Cambridge Observatory and the Cavendish Laboratory 1921-23.

Robert George Ferguson, physician (b at Joliette, ND 12 Sept 1883; d at Regina 1 Mar 1964). Ferguson studied arts, theology and medicine at the University of Manitoba and in 1917 became medical superintendent of the Saskatchewan Anti-tuberculosis League at Fort Qu'Appelle.

Lorenzo Ferrer Maldonado, apocryphal navigator, adventurer (b in Spain; d 1625). In 1601 he submitted to King Philip III of Spain a document about his purported 1588 voyage through the NORTHWEST PASSAGE from east to west.

Francis Napier Denison, weather forecaster, engineer, scientist (b at Toronto, Canada W 19 Apr 1866; d at Victoria 24 June 1946). An innovative scientist, Denison was known to thousands of Victorians as "our weatherman.

A natural engineer, Cook worked as a young scientist on constant-condition chambers (ie, refrigerated greenhouses to simulate prairie farming conditions). This led to unusual war work such as the overnight conversion of freighters into refrigerated food ships.

George Herrick Duggan, engineer (b at Toronto 6 Sept 1862; d near St-Jérôme, Qué 8 Oct 1946). He was educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto (DSc).

Edgar Dewdney, surveyor, politician (b in Devonshire, Eng 1835; d at Victoria 8 Aug 1916). Dewdney came to BC in 1859 and built the DEWDNEY TRAIL. In 1870 he was elected to the Legislative Council of BC as member for Kootenay.

Joseph-Alphonse Couture, veterinarian (b at Ste-Claire, Qué 15 Dec 1850; d at Québec C 12 Mar 1922). He served in the Canadian militia 1866-68 against the FENIANS and then in the Papal ZOUAVES in Italy 1868-70.

Thomas Neill Cream, doctor, murderer (b at Glasgow, Scot 1850; d at London, Eng 15 Nov 1892). Educated in medicine at McGill, Cream was responsible for a string of murders in Canada, the US and Britain. He was also a thief, arsonist, blackmailer and illegal abortionist.
