Patrick Duncan McTaggart-Cowan, meteorologist (b at Edinburgh, Scot 31 May 1912; d at Bracebridge, Ont 11 Oct 1997), younger brother of Ian MCTAGGART-COWAN. McTaggart-Cowan's family immigrated to Canada in 1913; he graduated from the University of British Columbia and was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford.

Kenneth Henry Mann, freshwater and marine biologist (born at Dovercourt, England 15 August 1923; naturalized Canadian; died at Halifax, NS 24 January 2010).

Angus Mackay, prairie agriculturist (b near Pickering, UC 10 Jan 1841; d at Indian Head, Sask 10 June 1931). Mackay is reputedly the man who introduced "summer fallow," which some historians consider more important than any other discovery in allowing successful agriculture on the Canadian prairies.

John Mackieson, physician, officeholder (b at Campsie, Scot 16 Oct 1795; d at Charlottetown 27 Aug 1885). A pioneer of the PEI medical profession, Mackieson was most distinguished by his work with the insane.

Andrew George Latta McNaughton, army officer, scientist, diplomat (b at Moosomin, NWT [Sask] 25 Feb 1887; d at Montebello, Qué 11 July 1966).

Andrew McKellar, astrophysicist, molecular spectroscopist (b at Vancouver 2 Feb 1910; d at Victoria 6 May 1960). McKellar received the MBE in 1947 for his work in WWII as a research officer in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Richard Helmuth Frederick Manske, scientist (b at Berlin, Ger Sept 1901; d at Guelph, Ont 7 Sept 1977). In 1906 Manske immigrated with his family to Macklin, Saskatchewan.

Alejandro Malaspina, explorer (b at Mulazzo, Italy 5 Nov 1754; d at Pontremoli, Italy 9 Apr 1810). Born to an illustrious but impoverished family, Malaspina entered the Spanish naval service. In 1784 he sailed around the world in the frigate Astrea.

James Gordon MacGregor, physicist (b at Halifax 31 Mar 1852; d at Edinburgh, Scot 21 May 1913). Educated at Dalhousie University, MacGregor was awarded a Gilchrist scholarship in 1871 and studied under Peter Guthrie Tait at Edinburgh and Gustav Wiedeman at Leipzig.

Cluny Macpherson, doctor, inventor, businessman, justice of the peace (b at St John's Mar 1879; d there 16 Nov 1966).

Steven Glenwood MacLean, FRCGS, physicist, astronaut (born 14 December 1954 in Ottawa, ON). Steve MacLean was among the first astronauts recruited in Canada and in 1992 became the third Canadian to fly in space. On his second mission to space (2006), he became the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm2 robotic arm and the second to complete a spacewalk, after Chris Hadfield. He has also contributed to the country’s space programs as director general of the Canadian Astronaut Program (1994–96) and president of the Canadian Space Agency (2008–13).

William George MacCallum, pathologist (b at Dunnville, Ont 18 April 1874; d at Baltimore, Md 3 Feb 1944). After graduating in 1894 from the University of Toronto, he entered Johns Hopkins Medical School and graduated with an MD in 1897. He took up the study of pathology after a year as intern.

Duncan McEachran, teacher, administrator (b at Campbelltown, Scot 27 Oct 1841; d at Ormstown, Qué 24 Oct 1924). He graduated from Edinburgh Veterinary College in 1861 and came to Canada in 1862 to practise in Woodstock, Canada West.

Richard George McConnell, geologist, explorer (b at Chatham, Canada E 26 Mar 1857; d at Ottawa 1 Apr 1942). In 1879 he graduated from McGill and began working for the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CANADA in Québec.

He served as chief engineer of the Montréal Water Board and designed the water-supply system for Hamilton, Ont (1859), as well as the waterworks in Ottawa (1874). His Hamilton Pumping Station, with its working Gartshore beam engines, has been declared a national historic site.

Keith Leon Moore, anatomist (b at Brantford, Ont 5 Oct 1925). Educated at Western (PhD, 1954), he joined the staff at U of Man in 1956.
