Eli Franklin Burton, physicist (b at Green R, Ont 14 Feb 1879; d at Toronto 6 July 1948). Educated at U of T and Cambridge, Burton spent his whole career at U of T, succeeding J.C. McLennan as head of the physics department in

Pierre Deslongchamps, chemist, educator (b at St-Lin, Qué 8 May 1938). He is an international leader in the field of organic synthesis and his work on the stereo-electronic effects operative in many organic processes is widely acclaimed.

Bertram Neville Brockhouse, physicist (born 15 July 1918 in Lethbridge, AB; died 13 October 2003 in Hamilton, ON). Brockhouse pioneered the use of thermal neutrons to study structural, dynamical and magnetic aspects of the behaviour of condensed matter systems at an atomic level.

Edward Lloyd Bousfield, invertebrate zoologist (b at Penticton, BC 19 Jun 1926).

David Boyle, blacksmith, teacher, archaeologist, museologist, historian (b at Greenock, Scot 1 May 1842; d at Toronto, Ont 14 Feb 1911). Although apprenticed as a blacksmith on arriving in Canada in 1856, Boyle became internationally prominent as Canada's premier archaeologist before WWI.

Charles Alexander McDowell, physical chemist (born 29 August 1918 in Belfast, Ireland; died 18 September 2001). McDowell came to Canada in 1955 as head of the chemistry department of the University of British Columbia.

William Brydone Jack, mathematician, astronomer, educator (b at Trailflatt, Scot 23 Nov 1817; d at Fredericton 23 Nov 1886).

Otto Julius Klotz, astronomer (b at Preston, Canada W 31 Mar 1852; d at Ottawa 28 Dec 1923). With W.F. KING and E.G. DEVILLE, Klotz was responsible for the formation of the astronomical branch of the Department of the Interior, and for the building of the Cliff Street Observatory in 1890.

The Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE)/Conseil canadien des ingénieurs (CCI), established in 1936, is the national organization of the provincial and territorial associations that governs the practice of engineering in Canada.

Pierre-Étienne Fortin, politician, surgeon, conservationist (b at Verchères, LC 14 Dec 1823; d at La Prairie, Qué 15 June 1888). After graduating from the Petit Séminaire de Montréal (1841) and McGill College (1845), he practised medicine at GROSSE ÎLE (1847-48).

Murray Llewellyn Barr, anatomist, geneticist (b at Belmont, Ont 20 June 1908; d at London, Ont 4 May 1995). A major contributor to the establishment of the science of human cytogenetics, Barr was educated at Western and was a member of its faculty 1936-77.

Simon James Dawson, surveyor, engineer, legislator (b at Redhaven, Scot 1820; d at Ottawa 20 Nov 1902). After immigrating to Canada, Dawson was engaged initially on surveys in Québec but by April 1858 was surveying the

Edward A. Watson, veterinarian, pathologist, researcher (b in Devon, Eng 2 Jan 1879; d at Victoria 12 Mar 1945). He came to Canada in 1896 and, with a brother, homesteaded in Saskatchewan.

Pehr Kalm, botanist (b in Sweden 6 Mar 1716; d in Finland 16 Nov 1779). Kalm was educated in Finland and Sweden. He met the leading European naturalist, Linnaeus, in 1741, and under his influence became an expert on botanical applications to agriculture.

Joseph Hiram Grisdale, agronomist (b at Ste-Marthe, Qué 18 Feb 1870; d at Iroquois, Ont 24 Aug 1939). Son of a farmer, trained at OAC and Iowa State Coll, Grisdale joined the staff of the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, in 1899, and in 1911 succeeded William SAUNDERS as director.

Joseph Workman, psychiatrist, educator (b near Lisburn, Ire 26 May 1805; d at Toronto 15 Apr 1894). He immigrated to Montréal in 1829 and received his MD from McGill in 1835.

Simon Fraser Tolmie, veterinarian, farmer, politician, premier of BC 1928-33 (b at Victoria 25 Jan 1867; d there 13 Oct 1937), son of William Fraser TOLMIE.

Marc-Adélard Tremblay, OC, GOQ, FRSC, professor of anthropology (born 24 April 1922 in Les Éboulements, QC; died 20 March 2014 in Quebec City, QC).

William Arthur Parks, geologist, palaeontologist, teacher (b at Hamilton, Ont 11 Dec 1868; d at Toronto 3 Oct 1936). A graduate of University of Toronto (BA, 1892; PhD, 1900), he joined its staff in 1893 and became professor and head of the geology department in 1922.
