Petrolia was originally called Petrolea but its name was changed due to a clerical error. Both its original and current names reflect the discovery of oil in the area. Oil was discovered in 1861 although it was not until 1866 that it was developed. That same year it was incorporated as a village.
During its early history Strathroy suffered a number of devastating fires. In 1868 a blaze wiped out a considerable portion of Strathroy's business section. Several fires in manufacturing plants in the late 1890s and an agricultural depression caused a period of economic downturn for the town.
Saint-Raymond's industrial activity has always been closely linked to the forest industry. Sawmilling, pulp and paper, wood products, house and cottage manufacturing as well as charcoal production, are still key economic activities.
Niverville, Manitoba, incorporated as a town in 1993, population 3540 (2011c), 2464 (2006c). The Town of Niverville is located 40 km south of Winnipeg.
The town began with an edict by King Louis the XIV of France on 29 June 1711 which established the parish of St-Joachim de Pointe-Claire. A civil parish was established 11 years later on 3 March 1722. On 1 July 1845, the parish came under the control of the clergy.
In 1863 the area became known as the Parish of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. The first settlers named it in memory of their native parish of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière in France. In 1968, it became the city of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts.
The town of Creighton dates from the 1930s when the Department of Natural Resources constructed a road from Flin Flon to Amisk Lake. People began to settle along the road, and after World War II a town site was surveyed. The lots were largely taken up by young men returning from the armed services.
Visitors are attracted by Iberville's impressive Roman Catholic church, local vineyards and picturesque riverside setting. Iberville and the surrounding region were hard hit by the January 1998 ice storm that slashed across eastern Ontario and southern Québec.
History Donnacona had its beginning in 1700 with the building of a paper mill at a site along the river called Fond Jacques-Cartier. A second mill was built in 1815 and a third mill, Donnacona Paper, was built in 1912.
Two large secondary industries process barley for malt and manufacture environmental storage tanks. A greenhouse comprising 2 ha for plant micropropagation, a salt mine and a poultry farm also provide employment. Its well-known slogan "New York is Big ... but this is Biggar" greets visitors as they enter the town.
This area, part of the seigneury granted to Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville in 1694, was sufficiently settled at the end of the 18th century to warrant the creation of a mission church, Saint-Hilaire.
Swan Hills, Alta, incorporated as a town in 1967, population 1465 (2011c), 1645 (2006c). The Town of Swan Hills is located in the Swan Hills, 209 km northwest of Edmonton. The Swan Hills were named by the Cree for legendary giant swans whose thundering wings would fill the air.

Mount Royal was part of a seigneury granted to the SULPICIAN order in the early 18th century. Separated from the growing city of Montréal by the mountain, the area remained primarily an agricultural community until the early 20th century.
