John Howatt Bell, lawyer, politician, premier of Prince Edward Island (born at Cape Traverse, PEI Dec 1846; died at Los Angeles, Calif 29 Jan 1929). Member of the PEI Legislative Assembly 1886-98 and MP 1898-1900, Bell, a Liberal, was re-elected provincially in 1915 and was premier 1919-23.

Charles Dow Richards, lawyer, politician, premier of NB 1931-33 (b at Southampton, York County, NB 12 June 1879; d at Fredericton 15 Sept 1956). Initially a schoolteacher, Richards was admitted to the bar at age 33.

James Layton Ralston, lawyer, politician (b at Amherst, NS 27 Sept 1881; d at Montréal 21 May 1948). A WWI battalion commander with a reputation for bravery and competence, Ralston was twice minister of national defence, 1926-30 and 1940-44.

Jacob Laurence Cohen, lawyer (b at Manchester, Eng 1898; d at Toronto 24 May 1950). Immigrating with his family to Canada in 1908, Cohen supported his mother and 5 younger children after his father's death in 1911.

Alexander Rankin, timber merchant, politician (b in parish of Mearns, Scot 31 Dec 1788; d at Liverpool, Eng 3 Apr 1852). Rankin became a clerk in the firm of Pollok, Gilmour and Co, Glasgow merchants who traded with the Baltic ports.

Daniel Woodley Prowse, judge, publicist, historian (b at Port de Grave, Nfld 12 Sept 1834; d at St John's 27 Jan 1914). Educated in St John's and Liverpool, England, Prowse was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1859.

John Sheridan Hogan, journalist, politician (b near Dublin, Ire 1815?; d at Toronto 1 Dec 1859). A contributor to numerous newspapers and magazines, including Blackwood's, Hogan founded his own weekly, The United Empire, and in 1855 became editor of Toronto's British Colonist.

James Armstrong Richardson Jr., PC, grain merchant, politician (born 28 March 1922 in Winnipeg, MB; died 17 May 2004 in Winnipeg). The son of James A. Richardson Sr., James Jr. studied at Queen’s University and served in the RCAF as a Liberator bomber pilot patrolling the North Atlantic. He joined the family firm of James Richardson and Sons Ltd. in 1946 and was chairman and executive officer from 1966 to 1968. Richardson was elected Liberal member of Parliament for Winnipeg South in June 1968 and appointed minister without portfolio in July. From 1969 to 1972, he was minister of Supply and Services. He was re-elected in the 1972 general election and was appointed minister of National Defence. Following his resignation from Cabinet in 1978 over the government’s language policy, he sat as an Independent (1978–79), after which he returned to the family firm and became a director.

Arthur Peters, lawyer, premier of PEI (b at Charlottetown 29 Aug 1854; d there 29 Jan 1908), brother of Frederick Peters. Called to the Prince Edward Island Bar in 1878, Peters was first elected to the Assembly in 1890 as a Liberal.

Frederick Seymour, colonial administrator, governor of BC (b at Belfast, Ire 6 Sept 1820; d at Bella Coola, BC 10 June 1869).

John Saunders, judge and politician (b at Virginia Beach, Virginia 1 June 1754; d at Fredericton, NB 24 May 1834). Saunders served with distinction in the Queen's Rangers during the American Revolutionary War, and later studied law in England.

In the 1972 and 1979 federal elections Savage ran unsuccessfully for the Liberals. He was elected to the Dartmouth School Board in 1978 and became its chairman in 1984. A self-styled social activist, he strongly advocated social issues and became a popular board member.

Benjamin Russell, jurist, author (b at Dartmouth, NS 10 Jan 1849; d at Halifax 21 Sept 1935). An accomplished and versatile jurist, Russell quickly distinguished himself after being called to the NS Bar in 1872.

Herman Witsius Ryland, officeholder (b at Warwick or at Northampton, Eng 1759(?); d at Beauport, LC 20 July 1838). He arrived in Lower Canada in 1793 as civil secretary under Lord DORCHESTER and was secretary to Dorchester's successors until 1813.

Chester Alvin Ronning, diplomat (b at Fancheng [Xiangfan], China 13 Dec 1894; d at Camrose, Alta 31 Dec 1984). He spent his early years in China and in northern Alberta.

Edgar Nelson Rhodes, lawyer, politician, premier of NS (b at Amherst, NS 5 Jan 1877; d at Ottawa 15 Mar 1942). A distinguished politician, he began his career as a lawyer in Amherst in 1902.

Charles Stewart Almon Ritchie, diplomat, author (b at Halifax 23 Sept 1906; d at Ottawa 8 June 1995). Ritchie joined the Dept of External Affairs in 1934, rising to assistant (later deputy) undersecretary 1950-54.
