James Bagnall, printer, publisher, politician, officeholder (b at Shelburne, NS 1783; d at Bedeque, PEI 20 June 1855). The son of New York LOYALISTS, he moved with his parents to Charlottetown as an infant.

Joseph Mimran, entrepreneur, consultant, fashion designer, retailer (born 2 December 1952 in Casablanca, Morocco). Mimran is best-known for launching the Alfred Sung, Club Monaco and Joe Fresh fashion brands, as well as his involvement with Pink Tartan, a fashion line designed by Kimberley Newport-Mimran, his second wife. Mimran is a partner at Gibraltar Ventures, a Toronto-based firm that invests in technology-driven companies. He also appears as a Dragon on the CBC series Dragons’ Den.

John Kenneth Galbraith, economist, writer (b at Iona Station, Ont 15 Oct 1908; d at Cambridge, Mass 29 Apr 2006). Having graduated from Ontario Agricultural College (Guelph) in 1931, Galbraith received a doctorate in agricultural economics at University of California, Berkeley.

William Price, entrepreneur (b at Hornsey, Eng 17 Sept 1789; d at Québec C 14 Mar 1867). An enterprising lumber and timber merchant, William Price, "the father of the Saguenay," developed a business empire that extended throughout the Saguenay, St Lawrence and Ottawa river areas.

Sir Édouard Percy Cranwill Girouard, railway builder, governor (b at Montréal 26 Jan 1867; d at London, Eng 26 Sept 1932). A graduate of the Royal Military College, Kingston (1886), he was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1888 and was in charge of the Sudan railways 1896-98.

Sir Robert Gillespie Reid, bridge and railway builder, financier (b at Coupar Angus, Scot 1842; d at Montréal 3 June 1908). He worked briefly in Australia as a contractor and then came to Canada (1871).

An alcoholic, usually in debt, Edwards moved to Toronto in 1909, then to Montréal, Port Arthur, Ont, and Winnipeg, returning to Calgary in 1911. Unconventional to the end, he supported Prohibition in the referendum of 1916, then won election as an independent in the 1921 provincial elections.

Sidney Smith Shatford, business executive (b at Hubbards, NS 1 Dec 1864; d at Halifax 8 June 1956). In partnership with his brother, he founded NS's first oil business.

John Fitz-William Stairs, merchant, shipper, politician (b at Halifax 19 Jan 1848; d there 24 Sept 1904). Eldest son of William Stairs, MLA and a leading merchant, Stairs studied at Dalhousie. Elected to the NS Legislative Assembly in 1879, he resigned in 1882.

Albert Bowman Rogers, railway surveyor, engineer (b at Orleans, Mass 28 May 1829; d at Waterville, Mass 4 May 1889). Discoverer and explorer of Kicking Horse Pass and discoverer of Rogers Pass through the Rocky and Selkirk mountain ranges in BC.

Charles Sherwood Noble, agriculturist, industrialist (b at State Centre, Iowa 16 May 1873; d at Lethbridge, Alta 5 July 1957). He developed the Noble Blade, a cultivator that gave dryland farmers everywhere their first sure method of protecting soil from wind erosion.

Angus Bernard MacDonald, educator, co-operative leader (b at Glassburn, NS 21 Nov 1893; d at Ottawa 13 Sept 1952).

Eugene O'Keefe, brewer, banker, philanthropist (born 10 December 1827 in Bandon, Ireland; died 1 October 1913 in Toronto, ON).

Sir Byron Edmund Walker, banker (b in Seneca Township, Haldimand County, Canada 14 Oct 1848; d at Toronto 27 Mar 1924). After leaving school at the age of 13, Walker entered his uncle's private banking business in Hamilton as a discount clerk.

Robert Charles Vaughan, railway executive (b at Toronto 1 Dec 1883; d at Montréal 5 Jan 1966). Vaughan joined the CPR as messenger in 1898.

John Bell, fur trader, explorer (b on the Isle of Mull, Scot 1799; d at Saugeen, Ont 24 June 1868). John Bell joined the North West Company as a clerk in 1818.

Edward Plunkett Taylor, "E.P.," businessman (b at Ottawa 29 Jan 1901; d at Lyford Cay, Bahamas 14 May 1989). Educated at McGill, Taylor joined the stockbroking firm MCLEOD, YOUNG, WEIR AND CO in Ottawa in 1923, moving to Toronto in 1928 and becoming a director in 1929.

Samuel James Hungerford, railway executive (b near Bedford, Qué 16 July 1872; d at Farnham, Qué 7 Oct 1955).

Samuel Black, fur trader, explorer (b at Pitsligo, Scot 3 May 1780; d at Kamloops, New Caledonia [BC] 8 Feb 1841). He joined the XY Co, which was absorbed by the NORTH WEST CO in 1804.
