 Fredrik Stefan Eaton, merchant (b at Toronto 26 June 1938), great-grandson of Timothy EATON and grandson of John Craig EATON; president of the T. EATON CO LTD.

The introduction of the Eaton catalogue in 1884 gave Canadians, particularly those in pioneer farming communities, access to a variety of merchandise.

Sir Samuel Cunard, merchant, shipowner (b at Halifax 21 Nov 1787; d at London, Eng 28 Apr 1865).

Norris Roy Crump, railway executive (b at Revelstoke, BC 30 July 1904; d at Calgary 26 Dec 1989). Born into a railway family, Crump began with the CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY as a labourer in 1920, taking time off to study science at Purdue University.

Walter Deiter, politician, businessman (b at Peepeekesis Indian Reserve, Sask 31 May 1916; d at Regina 7 Sept 1988). Deiter was active in the development of Indigenous political organizations in the 1960s.

Robert Atkinson Davis, businessman, politician, premier of Manitoba 1874-78 (b at Dudswell, Qué 9 Mar 1841; d at Phoenix, Ariz 7 Jan 1903). Davis came to Winnipeg in May 1870 and bought a downtown hotel, which he named Davis House.

Alfred Ernest Ames, investment dealer (b at Lambeth, CW 3 Sept 1866; d at Toronto 20 Sept 1934). He worked as a bank clerk, then moved to Toronto and established A.E. Ames Co, investment dealers, 1889, the same year he married Mary Cox, daughter of financier and senator George Cox.

Coureurs des bois were itinerant, unlicenced fur traders from New France. They were known as “wood-runners” to the English on Hudson Bay and “bush-lopers” to the Anglo-Dutch of New York. Unlike voyageurs, who were licensed to transport goods to trading posts, coureurs des bois were considered outlaws of sorts because they did not have permits from colonial authorities. The independent coureurs des bois played an important role in the European exploration of the continent. They were also vital in establishing trading contacts with Indigenous peoples.

Sir Harry Oakes, prospector, mine owner (b at Sangerville, Maine 23 Dec 1874; d near Nassau, Bahamas 8 July 1943). A graduate of Bowdoin College, Oakes abandoned medical school in 1898 to prospect in the Klondike.

Walter Edward Foster, businessman, politician, premier of New Brunswick 1917-23 (b at St Martins, NB 9 Apr 1873; d at Saint John 14 Nov 1947). Chosen Liberal Opposition leader in 1916 and premier following the Liberal victory in 1917 he sat for Victoria in 1917 and Saint John City in 1920.

Nicolas Denys, trader, colonial promoter (b at Tours, France 1598; d 1688). A young La Rochelle merchant, Denys sailed for Acadia in 1632 with Isaac de RAZILLY, and spent the next 40 years trying to develop the colony.

Henry Franklin Bronson, lumber manufacturer (b at Moreau Twp, Saratoga County, NY 24 Feb 1817; d at Ottawa 7 Dec 1889). In 1852 Bronson and his partner John Harris moved to Bytown [Ottawa] to exploit the timber reserves of the Ottawa Valley, bringing his family the following year.

Thomas Cantley, businessman, politician (b at New Glasgow, NS 19 Apr 1857; d there 24 Feb 1945). Entering the iron-forging business as a youth when his province was rapidly industrializing, Cantley rose quickly and helped develop a modern steel complex in Pictou County.

Augustin Cuvillier, soldier, banker, politician (b at Québec C 21 Aug 1779; d at Montréal 11 July 1849). He attended the Collège de Montréal and became a Montréal merchant and auctioneer, served in the militia during and after the War of 1812, and was promoted to major.

Harry John Carmichael, industrialist (b at New Haven, Conn 29 Sept 1891; d at Toronto 28 Oct 1979). Born in the US of Canadian parents, Carmichael came to Canada and became president and general manager of McKinnon Industries, St Catharines, Ontario, in 1929.

Sidney Robert Carter, art and antique dealer, photographer (b at Toronto 18 Feb 1880; d at Montréal 27 Mar 1956). Carter was an early advocate of pictorialism in photography, and by 1901-02 was exhibiting in London, the US and Canada.

Peter J. Cashin, politician, businessman, soldier (b at Cape Broyle, Nfld 8 Mar 1890; d at St John's 21 May 1977). He joined the Newfoundland Regiment in 1915, served overseas and in March 1918 was promoted major in command of the British Machine Gun Corp.

William Eppes (Epps) Cormack, merchant, explorer, naturalist (b at St John's 5 May 1796; d at New Westminster, BC 30 Apr 1868).

Francis Hector Clergue, financier and industrial promoter (b at Brewer, Maine 28 May 1856; d at Montréal 19 Sept 1939). Born of Huguenot parents, Clergue studied law at Maine State College.

Matthew Henry Cochrane, cattle breeder, businessman (b at Compton, Lower Canada 11 Nov 1823; d there 12 Aug 1903).
