Charles Ambrose. Organist, teacher, b England 1791, d Hamilton, Ont 17 Feb 1856. After serving as organist at Chelmsford Cathedral in England, he emigrated to Canada in 1837 and settled on a farm near Guelph, Ont. In 1845 he became organist-choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Hamilton.

Yvette Lamontagne. Cellist, teacher, b Montreal 26 Dec 1898, d Montreal 18 June 1992. She studied for three years on scholarship with Gustave Labelle at the McGill Conservatory.

Frederick (Vladimir Lawrence) Geoghegan. Organist, teacher, b Lichfield, England, 23 Jul 1921, naturalized Canadian 1960, d Vancouver 28 Mar 1982. Piano studies were begun with his mother and continued at 14 with Wilkinson Urqhart and Tobias Matthay in London. He made his recital debut at 18.

Edward (Constantin) Laufer. Theorist, composer, teacher, b Zurich 25 Nov 1938, naturalized Canadian 1953; B MUS (Toronto) 1957, M MUS (Toronto) 1960, MFA (Princeton) 1964. He was raised in Halifax, where his family settled in 1939.

Pietro (Ottavio) Masella. Oboist, teacher, b Montreal 6 Jan 1924, d there 10 Mar 2007. Pietro Masella took his first oboe lessons from Giuseppe Agostini in 1935. His first experience as an orchestra player was in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (MSO) under the baton of Bruno Walter in 1941.

François Tousignant, composer, teacher (born 26 Apr 1955 in Montreal, QC; died 26 March 2019 in Montreal). François Tousignant’s catalogue of compositions includes some 30 works, in which serialism is a dominant influence. Among these are La Chevelure... for three sopranos and electric piano (1978), a commission from the French government on the occasion of the centenary of Alfred Cortot's birth and the 50th anniversary of the hall named after him; Portrait, a music-theater work inspired by Beaudelaire (1984); Concerto for piano and orchestra (1985); and Diptyque for orchestra (1988).

Margo (Christine) MacKinnon. Soprano, teacher, b Windsor, Ont, 21 Apr 1931; ARCT 1948, B MUS (Toronto) 1951; Artist Diploma (Toronto) 1954. She sang on radio station WJR in Detroit when she was about 14.

Mary Henderson. Soprano, teacher, b Longueuil (near Montreal) 17 Dec 1912. A study of the violin, begun at 10, led to a licentiate from McGill University. Her vocal studies, begun with Henri Pontbriand and Pauline Donalda in Montreal, were pursued in New York with C.

Forsyth composed in a 20th-century idiom, but it was also of paramount importance to him to create music that sounded good to contemporary listeners.
