Graeme Gibson, CM, writer, cultural activist, teacher (born 9 August 1934 in London, ON; died 18 September 2019 in London, England). Graeme Gibson was a noted Canadian author and conservationist. His novels Five Legs (1969), Communion (1971), Perpetual Motion (1982) and Gentleman Death (1993) were widely acclaimed. He also published the environmentally conscious The Bedside Book of Birds (2005) and The Bedside Book of Beasts (2009). A committed bird watcher, he helped found the Pelee Island Bird Observatory. He was also instrumental in forming the Writers’ Union of Canada, the Book and Periodical Development Council and the Writers’ Trust of Canada. He was a former president of PEN Canada and the longtime partner of Margaret Atwood.

George Anderson Wells, bishop, scholar, lecturer (b at Clarke's Beach, Nfld 18 Nov 1877; d at Toronto 10 Apr 1964). Wells was a fisherman, sealer, labourer, and a trooper in the SOUTH AFRICAN WAR before continuing his education at various American institutions.

His early life and career were marked by a series of geographical displacements. Born in England, Collins developed a passion for French architecture. During World War II, he joined the Yorkshire Hussars as a trooper and served as an intelligence officer in the Middle East and Italy.

Sir Robert Alexander Falconer, clergyman, scholar, educator (b at Charlottetown 10 Feb 1867; d at Toronto 4 Nov 1943). Falconer spent much of his youth in Trinidad, where his Presbyterian clergyman father had been posted.

Frank Fairchild Wesbrook, physician, educator (b in Brant County, Ont 12 July 1868; d at Vancouver 20 Oct 1918). Having obtained his arts and medical degrees at U of Man 1890, he did postgraduate work in London, Dublin and Marburg, Germany.

Huguette Labelle, née Rochon, nursing teacher and administrator (b at Rockland, Ont 15 Apr 1939). She began her career as a general staff nurse at the Ottawa General Hospital. After changing to teaching, she became founding director of the Vanier School of Nursing in Ottawa.

Joseph-Clovis-Kemner Laflamme, priest, educator, scientist (b at St-Anselme, Canada E 18 Sept 1849; d at Québec C 6 July 1910). After studying at the SÉMINAIRE DE QUÉBEC and later spending periods at Harvard and in Europe, Laflamme became professor of geology and mineralogy at Laval in 1870.

Caroline Adderson, writer and educator (born at Edmonton, AB 9 Sept. 1963). While Caroline Adderson studied education at the UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA her creative writing professor suggested she dedicate a year to writing after graduation.

Carl Frederick Klinck, literary historian, educator (b at Elmira, Ont 24 Mar 1908; d at London, Ont 22 Oct 1990). Klinck helped make CANADIAN STUDIES a central part of the curriculum: his Canadian Anthology (edited with R.E.

Roderick Andrew Francis MacKenzie, priest, scholar (b at Liverpool, Eng 15 Nov 1911; d at Pickering, Ont 30 Apr 1994). He came to Peterborough, Ont, with his family in 1924, then entered the Society of Jesus at Guelph, Ont, in 1928.

James Robbins Kidd, "Roby," adult educator, internationalist (b at Wapella, Sask 4 May 1915; d at Toronto 21 Mar 1982).

Leonard Charles Marsh, social scientist, professor (b at London, Eng 24 Sept 1906; d at Vancouver 10 May 1982). Marsh came to Canada in 1930 after studies at the London School of Economics.

Thomas McCulloch, educator, theologian, author (b at Ferenze, Scot 1776; d at Halifax 9 Sept 1843). One of the most prominent educators and theologians in the Maritimes, McCulloch was a prolific letter writer, as well as the author of books on theology and Letters of Mephibosheth Stepsure.
