Roger Charbonneau. Bassist, teacher, b Montreal 18 May 1908, d there 20 Oct 1964. He studied solfège with J.-J. Goulet and cello with his father, Louis Charbonneau, before taking up the double-bass with, in turn, Léon Wathieu, Warren Bentfield, and, at the CMM, Anselme Fortier of New York 1943-8.

Leslie Armour, philosopher (b at New Westminster, BC 6 Mar 1931). Armour, with a BA from the University of British Columbia (1952) and a PhD from the University of London (1956), taught PHILOSOPHY first in the US, then at Waterloo and at the University of Ottawa (since 1977).

George John Blewett, philosopher (b at St Thomas, Ont 9 Dec 1873; d at Go Home Bay, Georgian Bay, Ont 15 Aug 1912). English Canada's first native-born philosopher, he turned down job offers from the US, preferring to teach at Victoria College, Toronto (1906-12).

Lola (Frances Lane) MacQuarrie (b Smith). Educator, writer, b Winnipeg 30 Dec 1909, d there 24 Jan 1966; B SC (Manitoba) 1931. She was steadily involved in Winnipeg musical life after 1920, notably in the 1940s as choir director at Daniel McIntyre High School.

Gustave Comte. Critic, teacher, librettist, b Montreal 30 Mar 1874, d there 14 Feb 1932. He abandoned his legal studies to devote himself to music and theatre journalism, and wrote for several dailies in Montreal (La Patrie, La Presse, Le Canada) and Ottawa (Le Temps).

Gustav Ciamaga. Composer, teacher, writer, b London, Ont, 10 Apr 1930, d Toronto, 11 Jun 2011; MFA (Brandeis) 1958. He attended the University of Western Ontario 1951-4 while studying privately with Gordon Delamont.

Frank (Franklin Eugene) Churchley. Educator, author, pianist, b Oshawa, Ont, 15 Jun 1930; B MUS (Toronto) 1950, LRCT 1952, MA (Columbia) 1957, D ED (Columbia) 1959. His thesis was 'The piano in Canadian music education'.

Odette de Foras. Soprano, teacher, b Savoie, France, ca 1895, d Calgary 31 Dec 1976 or 1 Jan 1977. She spent her youth in Paris and at the Château de Thuyset, near Lake Geneva. With her family, she settled ca 1903 in High River, south of Calgary.

Antoine Rodrigue Albert Bouchard, organist, teacher, composer (born 22 March 1932 in St-Philippe-de-Néri, QC; died 21 October 2015 in Sainte-Claire, QC). Antoine Bouchard was an authority on organs and organ music. He performed as an organist in the United States, France, and particularly in eastern and central Canada. He taught organ at Université Laval from 1961 to 1997 and served as director of the School of Music there from 1977 to 1980. He was a founding member of the Amis de l'orgue de Québec and became a board member of the Canadian Music Council in 1978.
