Komorous, Rudolf. Composer, bassoonist, teacher, b Prague 8 Dec 1931, naturalized Canadian 1974. In Prague he studied bassoon 1946-52 at the State Cons and 1952-6 with Karel Pivonka at the Academy of Musical Arts. He also studied composition with Pavel Bořkovec at the academy.

(J.A.) François Héraly. Clarinetist, bandmaster, teacher, b Flavin, near Namur, Belgium, 1856, d Montreal between 20 and 22 Jul 1920. In 1867 he began music study in Brussels, and in 1873 he attended the conservatory at Namur, where he joined a regimental band.

Gideon Hicks. Bass-baritone, teacher, conductor, b Stoke-Climsland, Cornwall, England, 24 Jun 1868, d Victoria, BC, 23 Nov 1958. A pupil of C.C. Bethune in London, where he sang in concert and oratorio, Hicks moved to Vancouver in 1889.

Margaret Huston (b Houghston). Mezzo-soprano, teacher, b Toronto ca 1878, d near Greenwich, Conn, 1 Aug 1942. She was an elder sister of the actor Walter Huston.

Yvonne Hubert. Pianist, teacher, b Mouscron, Belgium, 28 May 1895, d Montreal 8 Jun 1988; premier prix piano (Lille Cons) 1906, premier prix piano (Paris Cons) 1911, honorary LLD (Concordia) 1981. She first took lessons at the Lille Cons.

Marek Jablonski. Pianist, teacher, b Krakow, Poland, 5 Nov 1939, d Edmonton 8 May 1999. He studied at the Krakow Conservatory when he was six. His family settled in Edmonton in 1949, but it was in Calgary and Banff during the summers that he continued his piano studies with Gladys Egbert.

Judy Fong Bates, writer, teacher (born at Kaiping County, Guangdong, China 22 Dec 1949). Judy Fong Bates IMMIGRATED to Canada with her mother in 1955. Meeting her father in Allandale (now Barrie), Ontario, Fong Bates discovered she and her parents were the only ASIAN citizens in the area.

Ogreta McNeill (b Ormiston). Librarian, teacher, b Gabarus, Cape Breton Island, NS, 2 Aug 1903, d East York, Ont, 21 Apr 1993; ATCM 1932, B MUS (Toronto) 1952, BLS (Toronto) 1953. She was raised in Victoria, BC, where she studied and taught piano. The young John Beckwith was one of her pupils.

George (Nelson) Maybee. Organist, choirmaster, educator, b Madoc, Ont, 13 Mar 1913. d Kingston, Ont, 31 Jul 1973. He studied in Canada with W. Ernest Wheatley and Healey Willan and in England under Sir Sidney Nicholson at the (then) English School of Church Music, Chislehurst.
