Charles Joseph Doherty, lawyer, educator, judge, politician (b at Montreal 11 May 1855; d there 28 July 1931). Educated at McGill, he later taught civil and international law there for many years while practising law. He served as a judge of the Quebec Superior Court 1891-1906.

Adelaide Hoodless, née Hunter, educational reformer, founder of the Women's Institutes (b at St George, Canada W 26 Feb 1857; d at Toronto 26 Feb 1910).

Guy Frégault, historian (b at Montréal 16 June 1918; d at Québec C 13 Dec 1977). Frégault pursued classical studies at Saint-Laurent and Jean-de-Brébeuf colleges in Montréal. He then enrolled in Université de Montréal and eventually completed his PhD in history at Loyola University, Chicago in 1949.

Pierre Deslongchamps, chemist, educator (b at St-Lin, Qué 8 May 1938). He is an international leader in the field of organic synthesis and his work on the stereo-electronic effects operative in many organic processes is widely acclaimed.

Henry Forbes Angus, educator, public servant (b at Victoria, BC 19 Apr 1891; d 17 Sept 1991). After completing a BCL (1914) and MA (1919) at Oxford and being made a barrister of law at the Inner Temple in England, Angus returned to Canada and earned a law degree at McGill University.

Yves Beauchemin, writer (b at Noranda, Québec; d 26 June 1941). Before becoming a Radio-Québec researcher, Beauchemin taught and worked in publishing.

John Bartlet Brebner, historian (b at Toronto 19 May 1895; d at New York C, NY 9 Nov 1957). Educated at University of Toronto, Oxford and Columbia University, he taught 1921-25 at U of T and then moved to Columbia U for the rest of his academic life.

George Sidney Brett, philosopher (b at Briton Ferry, Wales 5 Aug 1879; d at Toronto 27 Oct 1944).

Francis Dhomont. Composer, teacher, b Paris 2 Nov 1926. He studied in Paris with Ginette Waldmeier, Charles Koechlin and Nadia Boulanger. From 1944 to 1963, he composed for instruments and for voice, attempting to reconcile modality and atonality.

Guy Edouard André Joseph Desbarats, architect, teacher, dean, author, consultant (b at Montréal, QC 30 July 1925; d at Sherbrooke, QC 30 August 2003). Desbarats graduated from the MCGILL school of architecture in 1948.

Elmer Jamieson, educator (b on the Six Nations Indian Reserve, Ont 30 Aug 1891; d at Toronto 18 Apr 1972). He received his BA from McMaster in 1913. He enlisted in the army, and censorship of his letters led him to write home in Mohawk.

Wilson Duff, anthropologist, museologist (b at Vancouver 1925; d there 8 Aug 1976). Wilson Duff's entire professional career centered on the study of the Northwest Coast First Nations.

Alexander Melville Bell, educator, founder of the Canadian telephone industry (b at Edinburgh, Scot 1 Mar 1819; d at Washington, DC 7 Aug 1905). He was the father of Alexander Graham Bell.

Jacques Grand'Maison, academic, writer and Catholic priest (born 18 December 1931 in Saint-Jérôme, Qc; died 5 November 2016 in Saint-Jérôme). He is one of the most prolific intellectual Québécois of his generation.

The Canadian Library Association (CLA) was founded in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1946, and incorporated on 26 November 1947. CLA was a non-profit voluntary organization governed by an elected executive council and advised by over 30 interest groups and committees. After years of diminishing membership, the CLA was dissolved in 2016.
