Roger Filiatrault. Baritone, teacher, choir conductor, b Montreal 5 Feb 1905, d Lesage, near Montreal, 27 Apr 1973; premier prix voice (Brussels Royal Cons) 1928. He studied piano and violin before taking voice lessons from Salvator Issaurel.

Pierre Gautier. Organist, teacher, composer, b Argenton-sur-Creuse, Berry, France, 29 Oct 1863, d Eastview (now Vanier), near Ottawa, 15 Dec 1940. He studied piano, organ, and harmony in his native city, then in Paris at the Institut national des jeunes aveugles.

Simone Quesnel. Contralto, teacher, b Pointe-au-Chêne, Que, 19 Mar 1911, d Montreal 5 Dec 1987. She studied with Céline Marier and in 1931 gave a recital at the Delphic Study Club, which gave her a grant.

Rodolfo Masella. Bassoonist, teacher, b Montreal 7 Oct 1928, d there 29 Apr 1996. His first instrument was the cello, which he studied with Raoul Duquette and later with Jean Belland at the CMM 1943-6.

Charles (Lindsay) Foreman. Pianist, teacher, b East Chicago, Ind, 11 May 1949; B MUS (Indiana) 1971, Artist Diploma (Toronto) 1972, M MUS (Toronto) 1973. Before moving to Canada in 1972 Foreman studied piano with Rudolf Reuter in Chicago and Abbey Simon at Juilliard.

Orpha-F. Deveaux. Organist, pianist, teacher, b Saginaw, Mich, 24 Jul 1872, d Hartford, Conn, December 1933. His teachers in Montreal were Alexis Contant and Percival J. Illsley. He also studied at the New York College of Music with Mat Schmidt, among others.

Géza de Kresz. Violinist, teacher, conductor, b Budapest 11 Jun 1882, naturalized Canadian 1930, d Toronto 2 Oct 1959. He studied 1892-7 with Alajos Gobbi and 1897-1900 with Jenö Hubay at the National Cons in Budapest, graduating in 1900.

Martel, Oscar. Violinist, teacher, b L'Assomption, near Montreal, February 1848, d Chicago 1924; premiers prix violin, string quartet (Liège Royal Cons) 1870.

Charles-Joseph Ducharme. Teacher, b Lachine, near Montreal, 10 Jan 1786, d Ste-Thérèse-de-Blainville (Ste-Thérese), near Montreal, 25 Mar 1853. He studied music at the Séminaire de Québec along with academic subjects and theology.

Marcelle Deschênes. Composer, teacher b Price, near Rimouski, Que, 2 Mar 1939; B MUS (Montreal) 1965, L MUS (Montreal) 1967. At the University of Montreal she studied 1963-7 with Jean Papineau-Couture and Serge Garant.

Though his music is recognizably of the 20th century, among his contemporaries Fleming was a moderate. His compositions are basically tonal and use traditional techniques, forms, and media in a personal way.

Frederick (b Johann Friedrich Conrad) Glackemeyer. Band conductor, string-instrument and keyboard player, music dealer, teacher, b Hanover 10 Aug 1759, d Quebec City 12 Jan 1836. Since EMC 1981 appeared, it has been confirmed that Glackmeyer was born in 1759, not 1751.

Edna Marie Hawkin (b Steele). Pianist, teacher, organist, b Chesterfield, England, 6 Nov 1896, naturalized Canadian 1925, d Montreal 29 Jul 1988; ARCM, LRAM.

Judith (Anne) Fraser. Cellist, teacher, b Calgary 17 Sep 1934. She began to study cello at 10, working with Mary Short in Calgary and, after 1949, with Audrey Piggott in Vancouver.

(Marie) Andrée (Carmen) Desautels, CM, instrumentalist, musicologist, teacher (born 9 October 1923 in Montreal, QC). Andrée Desautels taught the history of music and musicology at the Connservatoire de musique du Quebec (CMM) from 1949 to 1988. She also taught at the Université de Montréal, the École Vincent-d’Indy, and the international Sessions of the Château d’Argenteuil in Brussels, Belgium, and is credited with introducing the ondes Martenot to Canada. She was also active in Youth and Music Canada (JMC) and was responsible for programming the organization’s performances at Expo 67. She was made a Member of the Order of Canada for being “the first Francophone to write about music in Canada” and for “pav[ing] the way for many researchers in this field.”

Mario Duschenes. Flutist, conductor, teacher, born Altona, near Hamburg, 27 Oct 1923, died Montréal, 31 Jan 2009; prix de virtuosité (Geneva Cons) 1946, honorary LLD (Concordia) 1979. By 1935 he had studied in turn recorder, solfège, and piano.

Gladys (Alma) Egbert (b McKelvie). Piano teacher, b Rapid City, near Brandon, Man, 31 Dec 1896, d Calgary 7 Mar 1968; honorary FRAM 1936, honorary LLD (Alberta) 1965. Her family moved to Calgary in 1903 and she began piano study with Ada Dowling Costigan.
