When the Dept of Music was founded in 1906, it offered only conservatory-type instruction under the direction of Abbie Helmer Vining (1906-7). W.L. Wright, afterfour years' study in Berlin with Leopold Godowsky, took over in 1907 and remained director until 1947.

Simon Fraser University. Non-denominational university founded in Burnaby, BC, in 1963, with undergraduate and graduate programs operating on a year-round tri-semester schedule. It was named after Simon Fraser (explorer, fur trader, 1776-1862), who gave his name to the Fraser River.

Trinity College of Music, London. Established in 1872 to provide a comprehensive music education and, through its external examinations department, to examine and award certificates and diplomas (ATCL, LTCL, FTCL).

Victoria Conservatory of Music. Major British Columbia teaching institution, incorporated in 1964 as the Victoria School of Music. It adopted the name 'conservatory' in September of 1968 and was affiliated with the University of Victoria from October of that year until 1978.

Mount Allison Ladies' College instituted a music program at its inception. In 1874 its first certificates in music, both in piano, were awarded to Ravinia Stewart and Alma Hickman.

Queen's University. Founded in Kingston, Ont, by the Presbyterian Church in 1841; it was a non-denominational university after 1912.

McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont. Founded in 1887 as the result of the union of Toronto Baptist College and Woodstock College (a Baptist preparatory school), and named after Senator William McMaster. The first degrees were awarded in 1894.

Founded by royal charter at York (Toronto), Upper Canada, in 1827 as the Church of England (Anglican) King's College. It granted its first degree in 1844 and was secularized and renamed the University of Toronto in 1850.

University of Guelph. Founded at Guelph, Ont, in 1964 as a non-denominational graduate and undergraduate institution incorporating the Ontario Veterinary College (founded 1862), the Ontario Agricultural College (1874), and the Macdonald Institute (1903).

Mennonite Brethren Bible College and College of Arts (named Concord College 1992-8, Canadian Mennonite University beginning in 1998). Theological and liberal arts college, founded in Winnipeg in 1944.

York University. Non-denominational Toronto institution offering a range of part-time and full-time undergraduate and graduate degree programs and non-degree courses. It was founded in 1959 and accepted its first students in 1960. Its first campus - Glendon - opened in 1961.

Western Ontario Conservatory of Music (WOCM). Teaching and examining body operated under the auspices of the University of Western Ontario 1934-97.

Concordia University. Created in August 1974 by a merger of Sir George Williams University and Loyola College, located respectively on de Maisonneuve and Sherbrooke streets in Montreal's west end. Both of those institutions offered music courses within regular programs.

Wilfrid Laurier University. Non-denominational university at Waterloo, Ont, with origins in the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary (founded 1911) and the Waterloo College of Arts (founded ca 1924 and affiliated 1925-60 with the University of Western Ontario).

Carleton University's music department was founded in 1967 with John Churchill (b London, 29 May 1920, d Sidbury, England, 1 Dec 1996) as its first chair.

Oldest French-language university in North America. It was founded 8 Dec 1852 by virtue of a charter signed by Queen Victoria granting the Séminaire de Québec 'the rights and privileges of a university'.
