An Apostrophe to the Heavenly Hosts, B584. One of Healey Willan's most famous and frequently performed choral works, composed in 1921 for the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and premiered in 1923. A text drawn from translated Eastern Orthodox liturgies is set for unaccompanied double chorus with brief contributions from two 'mystic' choruses. It was published 1921 by the Composer's Publication Society and reprinted 1936 by Harris. It has been recorded by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (1968, RCA LSC-3054/Mel SMLP-4030); the Festival Singers (1973, RCI 207/Cap ST-62485/ACM 11); the Elmer Iseler Singers and Netherlands Chamber Choir (released 1984, 2-Wat WR-8028-29); the Concordia Choir of Moorhead, Minn (Concordia Records VLPCC-910); and the Vancouver Chamber Choir (1995, 5 45183 2 Virgin Classics/EMI).
