Stowe-Gullen, Ann Augusta
Ann Augusta Stowe-Gullen, née Stowe, physician (b at Mount Pleasant, Canada W 27 July 1857; d at Toronto 25 Sept 1943), daughter of Emily Stowe. She was the first woman to gain a medical degree in Canada, graduating from Victoria Coll, Cobourg, Ont, in 1883, having studied at Toronto School of Medicine. On graduation she married Dr John B. Gullen, who was a founder in 1896 of Toronto Western Hospital, with which she was associated for many years. Meanwhile, she taught at the Ontario Medical Coll for Women (known 1883-94 as the Woman's Medical Coll, Toronto) and was on U of T Senate 1910-22. A leading figure in the suffrage movement, she succeeded her mother as president of the Dominion Women's Enfranchisement Assn in 1903.
