Balmoral Grist Mill

Balmoral Grist Mill in Balmoral Mills, NS, was built in about 1874 by Alexander MacKay. The mill is located on Matheson's Brook and was once just one of 5 mills on the brook. It was used to grind local stocks of wheat, oats, barley, rye and buckwheat to produce flour and oatmeal. Some of the grain was also used to produce livestock feed. An intriguing feature of the mill is its Scottish oat-drying kiln, which gives a distinctive flavour to the oatmeal. The mill still operates and visitors can purchase flour and meal at the site. This provincial historic site is open to the public from early June to mid-October.
