Charles Augustus Semlin

Charles Augustus Semlin, schoolteacher, prospector, rancher, premier of BC 1898-1900 (b at Barrie, UC Oct 1836; d at Ashcroft, BC 3 Nov 1927). After teaching in Barrie, Semlin came to BC in 1862, buying the Dominion Ranch in 1869. Elected Conservative MLA for Yale in 1871, he was defeated in 1875.

Charles Augustus Semlin, schoolteacher, prospector, rancher, premier of BC 1898-1900 (b at Barrie, UC Oct 1836; d at Ashcroft, BC 3 Nov 1927). After teaching in Barrie, Semlin came to BC in 1862, buying the Dominion Ranch in 1869. Elected Conservative MLA for Yale in 1871, he was defeated in 1875. Re-elected in 1882 he became leader of the Opposition in 1894 and premier in Aug 1898, but his government was defeated in 1900. Semlin himself was defeated in the ensuing election but regained his seat in a by-election in 1903. When MCBRIDE called an election shortly after, Semlin retired to his Cariboo ranch, where he remained active in ranching and stockbreeding associations.
