Edward Walter Scott, Ted, Anglican clergyman (b at Edmonton, 30 Apr 1919). Scott was educated at the University of British Columbia and Anglican Theological College, Vancouver.

Edward Walter Scott, Ted, Anglican clergyman (b at Edmonton, 30 Apr 1919). Scott was educated at the University of British Columbia and Anglican Theological College, Vancouver. As bishop of Kootenay (1966-71) and archbishop and primate of the ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA (1971-86), Scott encouraged ecumenical and social expressions of Christian faith. He was an active participant in the movement for Anglican-United Church union, which failed in 1975, a strong supporter of the ordination of women (1976) and of the interests of aboriginal peoples. He was moderator of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (1975-83).

In 1986 Scott was a member of a committee which sought means of bringing an end to apartheid in South Africa, and was president of the Canadian section of the International Defence and Air Fund for Southern Africa (1987-91) and cochair of the Nelson Mandela Fund (1990-92). Scott's commitment to ecumenism and social justice have given him wide influence. He became a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1978.
