G. (George) Welton Marquis. Musicologist, administrator, b Walla Walla, Wash, 4 Mar 1916, d Ashland, Ore, 22 Feb 1985; MA (Whitman) 1942, PH D (Southern California) 1950. He was an arranger-composer-conductor 1937-41 in Hollywood and was head 1951-4 of the Music Dept of Northern Illinois U, dean 1954-8 of the School of Music, Women's College of the University of North Carolina, and a Fulbright Professor 1957-8 at the University of Oslo. He served 1958-71 as head of the Dept of Music of the University of British Columbia and continued to teach music history and theory there until 1977. In 1967 he gave the CAPAC-MacMillan lecture at the RCMT Summer School. He was a president 1969-71 of CAUSM. Marquis was an outstanding teacher and an expert in early music and music theory.
