Ward, Norman

Norman Ward, political scientist, author, teacher (b at Hamilton, Ont 10 May 1918; d at Saskatoon 6 Feb 1990). Identified with U of Sask, Ward's reputation as a scholar is national and international. For 4 decades his prodigious writings on Parliament, its officers and members have informed Canadians of their pre-eminent national institution, while a score of federal and provincial commissions, committees and task forces have benefited from his academic rigour. The clarity of his prose derives from a parallel career as author of articles on etymology and linguistics and as a humorist; in this last capacity he has written 3 books (Mice in the Beer was awarded the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for humour in 1960). Wearing his scholarship lightly, his writings have provided a model of the thorough researcher for several generations of students and young academics.
