Established in 1985, the department places emphasis on programs which recognize the cultural and artistic diversity of the NWT, support northern artists, and encourage developing northern broadcasting systems. Programs sponsored by the department have included the Cultural Enhancement program, dealing with projects which promote the cultural identity of the various groups in the NWT; the Oral Traditions program; the Support to Northern Performers program; Community Broadcasting grants; and the NWT Arts Council.
