The Canadian Music Educator 1959- / LÉducateur de musique au Canada 1976-8; Le Journal des éducateurs de musique au Canada 1978-9; Le Musicien éducateur au Canada 1979-. Official journal of the CMEA. A quarterly, it began publication in June 1959 and includes essays, feature articles, and reviews of music and books. It served also as a news publication until 1968, when the CMEA established a separate newsletter. CMEA convention news, however, continued to appear in the CME. With an eye to becoming a fully bilingual publication, in 1975 it began to increase its French-language content, and a bilingual title appeared on the fall 1976 issue. Editors have been Leslie Bell 1959-62, Ezra Schabas 1962-3, Kenneth Bray 1963-9, Alfred Garson 1969-73, Duane Bates 1973-9 (interim editor Barbara L. Keane 1975-6), Margery Vaughan 1979-83, and Brian Roberts 1983-7, succeeded by Robert Walker in 1987. Beginning in 1987 annual publications of the CME have included three journals, one research issue, an ISME research publication (issued in alternate years), and three newsletters.

The Newsletter, originally published separately, came under the masthead of the CME in November 1988 (vol 29, no. 5). Its editors have been Wallace Laughton 1968-79, Marcia Loynd 1979-82, (hiatus), Diana Brault 1983-7, Donna-Faye Madhosingh 1987-9 (with Jane Atkinson 1988-9), succeeded by Atkinson with Joanne Brodeur in 1989.
