The song was introduced 6 Jul 1916 by the composer at a sing-song at the Camp Borden (Ontario) army base and was performed by massed bands at the 1916 CNE. Some 54,000 copies of the sheet music were sold within the first three months. Also arranged for band, orchestra, chorus, and mixed or male quartet, it was recorded by the Canadian Grenadier Guards Band, by the tenor Charles (tenor) Harrison with the Broadway Quartet, by the tenor David Irwin, and by the baritone Alan Turner.
