Beland Hugh Honderich, newspaper executive (born 25 November 1918 in Kitchener, ON; died 8 November 2005 in Vancouver, BC). As head of the Toronto Star, Honderich transformed a sensationalist but profitable working-class paper into a better modulated and equally profitable middle-class one that was less rigid in its liberalism. He began his career on the Kitchener-Waterloo Record in 1935 and went to the Star in 1943 as a reporter. Later its financial editor, he became editor in chief (1955), president and publisher (1966) and chairman and publisher (1969), and chairman of Torstar, the parent company. The Star is Canada's largest-circulation newspaper but Honderich was little known outside the business.
