Canadian Historical Association

The Canadian Historical Association was founded in 1922 when the Historic Landmarks Association, established 1907 by the ROYAL SOCIETY, was renamed and reconstituted. The CHA is the professional association of all historians in Canada and was incorporated in 1970. It is the largest and one of the oldest of the LEARNED SOCIETIES. It sponsors the National Archival Appraisal Board and acts as an umbrella organization for many local and provincial HISTORICAL SOCIETIES.

The association has maintained a broad program of publications in both English and French, including the Journal of the Canadian Historical Association, published since 1922, and a series of Historical Booklets and Canada's Ethnic Groups Booklets. Through these publications, awards and annual meetings, the CHA actively encourages historical research, particularly in the history of Canada, and promotes the preservation of the nation's heritage.
