Edward Roper

Edward Roper, painter, illustrator, amateur naturalist (b in Kent, Eng 1854; d 1891). He made several visits to N America and spent several months in BC in 1887 and the Yukon around 1890 making careful pencil and watercolour sketches of fauna and flora and collecting specimens. He exhibited paintings of western Canada in England and published an account of his travels in By Track and Trail through Canada (1891). His series of lithographs of Muskoka is perhaps the earliest visual record of this area as a vacation district. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
