George Lane, rancher (b near Des Moines, Iowa 6 Mar 1856; d at Bar U Ranch, near Pekisko, Alta 24 Sept 1925). Lane came to the Canadian West from Montana in 1883 and was hired as a ranch foreman by the North West Cattle Co. In 1891 he went into the stock business for himself and, with the 1905 purchase of the Bar U Ranch, became the owner of one of the largest ranches in Alberta. Lane also developed one of the continent's outstanding Percheron breeding herds and was one of the "Big Four" who organized the first CALGARY STAMPEDE.

Help students and educators this school year!

The Canadian Encyclopedia is a project of Historica Canada, a non-profit, nonpartisan organization devoted to teaching Canadians more about our shared country. Last school year, over 13 million people used The Canadian Encyclopedia as a trusted resource. Nearly 5 million of those users were students and teachers. Please donate today to help even more Canadians access free, impartial, fact-checked, regularly updated information about Canada’s history and culture in both official languages.
