Conant, Gordon Daniel
Gordon Daniel Conant, lawyer, Liberal politician, premier of Ontario (b near Oshawa, Ont 11 Jan 1885; d at Oshawa 2 Jan 1953). From 1937 the capable, faithful attorney general in the Ontario government of Mitchell HEPBURN, he inherited the premiership from his leader in October 1942. But Hepburn's feud with Prime Minister KING was tearing apart Ontario Liberals and his arbitrary choice of successor deepened resentment. Despite a productive legislative session, Conant could not heal the rift, and in April 1943 he resigned.
