Lida Baday, fashion designer (b at Hamilton, Ont 31 July 1957). Cited by the Globe and Mail as Canada's premier womenswear designer, Baday graduated from the fashion program at Ryerson Polytechnical University in 1979. After a period of working for various dress manufacturers, she launched her eponymous label in 1987. Baday's work is characterized by high-quality fabrics and sophisticated styling; she is particularly known for her skill with wool jersey. The label is now sold at Holt Renfrew across Canada, and at such illustrious department stores as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom's and Bergdorf Goodman in the US. Among her many awards are City of Toronto Designer of the Year (1992 and 1996); Vidal Sassoon International Buyer's Designer of the Year Award (1996); and 1998 Fashion Group International "Night of Stars" honoree. She also participated in the 15th annual Passport HIV/AIDS benefit with Elizabeth Taylor and Magic Johnson in San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1997.
