(Joseph Jean) Marc Samson. Critic, born Lauzon, near Quebec City, 14 Oct 1929; died Québec City, 6 Mar 2008. After taking piano lessons at the Collège de Lévis from Father Alphonse Tardif he studied ca 1948-50 at the CMQ with Hélène Landry and Henri Vallières (piano), Séverin Moisse (solfège), and Father Tardif (harmony). He joined the Quebec daily Le Soleil in 1964 as reporter and music critic. His writings may be found in Esquisses du Canada français (1966), The New Grove Dictionary, Sohlmans Musiklexikon, and EMC, and have appeared in the periodicals Canada Music Book, Musicanada, Variations, Vie musicale, and l'Actualité. He took part in several CBC radio and TV programs. He was a member of the Music Critics' Association and was a member of various juries in Canada, and 1982-4 of that of the Prix mondial du disque of Montreux, Switzerland. He married the pianist Louise Forand.
