Saskatchewan Music Council

The Saskatchewan Music Council. An organization founded in Saskatoon and Regina in 1967 by Lloyd Blackman, David Kaplan (chairman), and Rj Staples. Active 1967-72, the council's function was to act as a central forum for provincial musical organizations. Its meetings were held in Regina and Saskatoon on an irregular basis (1967, 1970, 1972), with representatives from universities, schools, the communications media, the SRMTA, music businesses, and the provincial government. Speakers such as Arnold Walter in 1967 and Richard Johnston in 1970 were a feature of these meetings, as were university student performers. The council advocated improved school music curricula and better teacher training and encouraged the provincial Dept of Education to sponsor a greater number of seminars, classes, and workshops. It also stimulated an increased awareness among broadcasters of the need for a balance between popular and 'classical' programming and petitioned for a CBC FM station in Saskatchewan.
