Semaines sociales du Canada, annual conferences started in 1920 by Jesuit Fr Joseph-Papin ARCHAMBAULT and organizers from the École sociale populaire. The goal was to train an elite who would spread a Christian spirit and the church's SOCIAL DOCTRINE throughout Québec's mores, institutions and laws.

Semaines sociales du Canada, annual conferences started in 1920 by Jesuit Fr Joseph-Papin ARCHAMBAULT and organizers from the École sociale populaire. The goal was to train an elite who would spread a Christian spirit and the church's SOCIAL DOCTRINE throughout Québec's mores, institutions and laws. Participating intellectuals applied the teachings of papal encyclicals - especially Rerum Novarum, the basis of Action sociale - to the social questions of trade unionism, the family, rural life, education, etc. Like the Roman Catholic Church with which it was linked, the semaines sociales were much more popular before WWII than after, although meetings continued until 1962.
